The stairs is perhaps the most engaging of building elements, requiring tactile and motive as well as visual interactions for its use. This grants architects an opportunity to engage with the form and construction in a unique way, giving particular importance to texture, finish, craftsmanship and the user’s physical engagement with the resultant piece.
The piece deals with a design, currently under construction, in which the user’s physical engagement with stairs is augmented by the exaggerated depth of the nosing. This simple alteration to the traditional timber stair also encourages visual interaction with the steps and the notable play of shadows underneath the projected nose.
