‘A Question of Space’ Design Workshops run by Suzanne E. Martin as part of Describing Architecture ‘Memory and Place’
In the city landscape, ‘place’ is largely interpreted by individual experience, previous encounters and prior knowledge. We bring associations and pre-established understanding to everything we do, in any city.
The workshops are an opportunity to shape and discuss these perceptions by experiencing this city in a new way. You are invited to become flaneurs, to explore your understanding of space and place, and to build a set of visual, textual and contextual ‘data’ that develop a new design-led topology of our city space.
– A 2hr place-making exercise, you will explore the known in an unfamiliar way and be invited to redefine your urban environment as part of the workshop group.
– With a map game, a set of provided prompts and your camera-phones, you’ll be asked to respond to series of questions then record and create a destination, a ‘place’, in the city.
– The resulting photographs will be curated as an exhibition (online and on-site) that builds throughout the residency; creating an image-based topology of the city, as experienced by participants.
– Encouraging you to see places/spaces/details you may not have considered before, this workshop aims to create insights into the everyday life of the city. Whether you work, shop, live, socialise, design or build in the city, this workshop is an opportunity to see it through a different lens.
